Create your own “hanging garden” on Sausalito’s hills

October 04, 2017

Some towns have a few hills…here in Sausalito we ARE hills.  This topography of course provides us with an abundance of views but a dearth of traditional flat gardening space.  But don’t let the slopes deter you from planting the garden of your dreams!  Join us on Thursday October 26th at 7PM in the Sausalito City Council Chambers to learn about hillside gardening with Marin Master Gardener – Mary Warner.

This seminar is part of our ongoing series hosted in partnership with Sausalito Public Library and the University of California Cooperative Extension Marin Master Gardeners.  The focus will be on site analysis and plant selection to ensure a successful hillside garden.  If you have questions about various microclimates, open slopes, soil types, predators – Mary Warner has the answers.

Following the event, feel free to explore the many great gardening books that the library has to choose from.  And for those of you looking to add to your permanent collection, the new Book Passage shop in Sausalito has a wonderful selection of gardening books in stock.

Please email info@sausalitobeautiful.org if you have any questions.

2017 Beautification Awards Ceremony

June 24, 2017

This week, Board Member and Chair Maureen McCoy hosted the 2nd Annual Beautification Awards Ceremony at the Sausalito Firestation.  These awards honor local businesses and property owners who have improved the aesthetics of Sausalito’s public spaces.

This year’s panel of judges consisted of Maureen McCoy, Mary Austin, Joe Burns, Daniel Merriam, Ive Haugeland, and Bob Gould. The panel reviewed fourteen nominees according to criteria such as sustainability, aesthetic appeal, the use of regionally appropriate plants, and water-conserving irrigation.

The judges selected the following winners for 2017:

Sherrie Faber & First California Realty

Isabel Allende’s property on Caledonia Street

Michael Lappert & Fish and Chips

Tom Wilhite of Green Man Garden Design and Consulting won this year’s “Little Willow” award for his extraordinary beautification efforts.

Sausalito Beautiful also added a new category this year for best “Secret Garden.” The contest ended in a draw. The two winners are the tiered gardens of the Sausalito Gourmet Deli and the rooftop garden and hanging planters at the Casa Madrona Hotel.

Seminar – Gardening with Native Plants

June 07, 2017

Please join us on Thursday June 29th at 7PM in the Sausalito City Council Chambers for the next exciting seminar in our ongoing series hosted in partnership with Sausalito Public Library and the University of California Cooperative Extension Marin Master Gardeners.

This seminar will be led by Bob Mauceli and will cover the use of native plants in your landscaping. Because native plants have co-evolved with native birds, butterflies, bees, other beneficial insects and mammals, planting them in your gardens helps maintain these populations. By using native plants, you can build a beautiful landscape that uses less water and fewer chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
