2nd Street Garden Project Kickoff

December 23, 2018

2ndStreetGarden_Email-header WEB

Since 2004, the 2nd Street Garden has been a labor of love with the support of the local community. Formerly named the “Friends of Second Street” garden, the design, original plantings and maintenance were funded through generous neighborhood gifts.

The time has come to revive and reorganize the ongoing care of our garden. Under the stewardship of Sausalito Beautiful, a pilot program, Neighborhood Projects, is organizing support and donations for the ongoing care of our charming 2nd Street Garden.

Sausalito Beautiful is committed to addressing long-deferred care and maintenance of Sausalito’s public landscapes. In that spirit, Sausalito Beautiful has committed to one year of support, offering to contribute $600 if the community can raise $1400 through neighborhood donations, to help encourage our adoption of this garden. It will serve as a model for other Neighborhood Projects. After 2019, we hope that the project will be self-funded through a regular donation program (via Sausalito Beautiful).

The 2019 goal is to raise $2,000 (including the matching gifts) from the community for professional gardening maintenance by January 31, 2019.

Goals

  1. Raise $2,000 to fund ongoing biannual professional gardening maintenance.
  2. Organize biannual neighborhood gardening meetups.

How will $2,000 be spent?

Funds will go towards professional gardening services twice a year for the 2nd Street Garden, and include pruning, weeding and mulching as needed to preserve this neighborhood treasure. Supplemental volunteer neighborhood gardening meetups will help with weeding and pruning in between professional services.

Upcoming Lecture: Backyard Birds and Bird Habitat – Thursday Feb. 22

February 04, 2018

Upcoming Lecture:  Backyard Birds and Bird Habitat
When:  Thursday, February 22nd at 7PM
Where:  Sausalito City Hall Council Chambers

Over 500 species of birds have been seen in Marin County, and you can see some of about 120 of these just by looking out your backyard windows. It’s easy, interesting, and a lot of fun doing backyard birding, and Marin Master Gardener Bob Mauceli will help you learn more about some of the most frequently seen of these backyard birds. He’ll also give you some pointers on how to make these birds easier to see by building a simple, sustainable bird-friendly habitat in your backyard.

Bob Mauceli has been a Master Gardener for almost 13 years, and a birder for over 40. He and his wife find some of their most satisfying birding in their current backyard, which has a ‘yard list’ of 75 species; they have built bird-friendly backyard habitats in the 11 homes in which they’ve lived together. This program is part of a series of talks by Master Gardeners presented by the Library and Sausalito Beautiful, in conjunction with the University of California Cooperative Extension Marin Master Gardeners.
