City Manager’s 2015 Year in Review Message Recognizes Sausalito Beautiful’s Public Landscape Contributions

December 18, 2015

The 2015 public landscape work of Sausalito Beautiful was featured at the top of Adam Politzer’s year-end “Message from the City Manager” for the second year in a row.  Many Sausalito residents, through their volunteer time, played a significant role in achieving this recognition.

We are encouraged by our City Manager’s support of our vision and are confident that thoughtful, strategic partnership and visionary planning will result in long-term, sustainable improvement in our public landscapes. The changes Sausalito Beautiful seeks to accomplish will go a long way toward creating landscapes we can all be proud of.

Green Thumbs At It Again

September 14, 2015

On Saturday, Sausalito Beautiful’s Green Thumbs were seen at Tiffany Park, finishing their first phase of garden restoration, namely weeding.

The weeding focused on the southern most section of the park, bordering the homes on Bridgeway. The Green Thumbs do not use herbicides and instead, dig up the weeds with their trowels, dandelion forks and spades. Hand-weeding is particularly important to prevent infestations of a variety of weeds because they are difficult to manage once they have invaded. Some of these weeds include Bermudagrass, Creeping woodsorrel, Dallisgrass, Dandelion, Spotted spurge, and Yellow nutsedge.

Hand-weeding tips include regularly removing weeds to greatly reduce the number of annual weeds in your landscape and removal while weeds are still young and before they set seed. Remove the entire weed, including the root, rhizome, or other underground plant parts such as tubers or bulbs.

Bolinar Plaza Landscape Renovation

August 01, 2015

Bolinar Plaza landscaping has been renovated, thanks to Sausalito Beautiful’s leadership and the generous participation of Schwartz and Associates Landscape Architecture, the Sausalito Art Festival and the City’s Department of Public Works. The new plantings, installed in July 2015 are thriving. Due to the hard work of those involved, this little gem of a park is once again sparkling!

Beautification Day Coming Soon – October 10 at Viña del Mar Plaza

July 30, 2015

Sausalito Beautiful’s Beautification Day chairs, Chris Ryan and Monica Towers, are gearing up for Beautification Day on October 10, 2015.  Come join us for a morning of weeding, planting and mulching one of Sausalito’s most visited public sites. Did you know that the elephants, which grace the entrance, and the fountain, came from the Panama-Pacific Exposition (San Francisco) in 1915?

If you are interested in helping out, please contact us at volunteer@sausalitobeautiful.org.

Viña del Mar Plaza is located in the heart of Sausalito, on Bridgeway and El Portal, near the ferry landing.

Thumbs Up to Green Thumbs

July 15, 2015

On the first Saturday morning of each month, weather permitting, you will see a skilled team of Sausalito residents in green vests, working hard to bring forward the beauty of neglected public landscapes. Have you noticed a difference at Tiffany Park on the South end of town? How about the newly painted bus shelter and landscape beautification at Easterby and Bridgeway on the North end? Be on the lookout for Green Thumbs as they work their magic at their three current sites along Bridgeway. Recently the group uncovered a charming brick wall by digging, clipping and sweeping away trash and weeds. Who knows what they’ll find next?!
